MGIMO is led by Professor Anatoly Torkunov, who became Rector in 1992, after serving as Dean and Vice-Rector for External Relations, Dean of the School of International Relations, First Vice-Rector and Head of the Department of Oriental Studies. In 1971–72 and 1983–86, Anatoly Torkunov served at Soviet Embassies in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and the United States of America. He has the rank of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary.
