Nikolay Silaev

Nikolay Silaev graduated from the Department of History at Lomonosov Moscow State University (1999). In 2003, he received his Ph.D. (Candidate of Historical Sciences) after defending his thesis titled The North Caucasus as a part of Russia in the second half of the 19th century: demographic, economic, administrative and legal aspects of integration.

Since 2004, he has been a senior research fellow at the Center for Caucasus and Regional Security Issues at the Institute for International Studies at MGIMO. In 2005-2013 he worked as a correspondent and editor of the politics department of the Expert journal, receiving a prize of the Iskra national media award. Since 2009, he has been the Director of the Caucasian Cooperation non-profit partnership. He is also the author of the monograph Ethnic Movements and Municipal Politics in the North Caucasus (2020).

Nikolay Silaev has been a leader and contributor in several research projects such as:

  • The Circassian Issue’: National Movement in Modern Russia (2012, supported by the Institute for Social Design (Institut Obschestvennogo Proektirovaniya) within the framework of the Presidential Grant Competition).
  • Local Governance in the North Caucasus: Power Structures and Resource Allocation Mechanisms (2013, supported by the Institute for Social Design (Institut Obschestvennogo Proektirovaniya) within the framework of the Presidential Grant Competition).
  • Ethnicity and Politics in the North Caucasus (2015, supported by the ISERP Fund within the framework of the Presidential Grant Competition).
  • Eurasia Index information and analytical system (RFBR, 2017-2018).
  • Typology of Modern Military and Political Alliances and Models of Russia's Relations with Allies (RFBR, 2018-2020).
  • U.S.-Ukrainian Relations in the Post-Soviet Period: Strategic Interests, Motives, Values (RFBR, 2019).
  • Transformation of the International Relations in the Context of Technological Change. Grant of the Government of the Russian Federation for state support of research by leading scientists (2018-2020).

Nikolay Silaev was awarded a Certificate of Merit from the Rector of MGIMO for conscientious work at the University and on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of MGIMO (2019); a Certificate of Merit from the Administration of the Russian President (2013), a commendation from the Administration of the Russian President (2010).
