On August 28, 2023 MGIMO Rector, Academician Anatoly Torkunov met the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Lao PDR H.E. Vilavanh Yiapoher.
Ambassador Vilavanh Yiapoher, MGIMO graduate of 1987, congratulated Rector with his birthday and expressed her warm feelings about studying in the university. Rector Torkunov told the Ambassador about MGIMO’s ongoing projects in terms of expanding relations with Laos and ASEAN in the spheres of education, research and socio-cultural communication. This year six students from Lao PDR were admitted to the BA programs and one – to the brand new MA Degree Program “Political Economy of ASEAN-Russia Strategic Partnership”.
Ambassador noted that MGIMO continues to be the centre of excellence in terms of training international-level professionals. She has specifically emphasized that the University continues to develop and progress in many spheres. Next year Lao PDR will be chairing ASEAN. In this regards, MGIMO will be hosting a number of activities dedicated to the Lao language studies and research collaborations with Laos.
Minister Counselor Vongvilay Thiphalangsy, Third Secretary Khamnang Vilayvan, Vice Rector for Students’ Development and International Affairs Dr. Stanislav Surovtsev and the Director of the ASEAN Centre Dr. Ekaterina Koldunova joined the meeting. Embassy’s delegation also visited the ASEAN Centre.
