May 17th, MGIMO Rector Anatoly Torkunov welcomed the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Mongolia, also a graduate of Moscow State Institute of International Relations (1994), Damdin Tsogtbaatar. The guest participated in a meeting with the management of the University and gave a talk to students.
The Minister visited MGIMO in the framework of his official visit to Moscow, during which he met with the head of Russia’s Foreign Ministry, Sergey Lavrov. The parties discussed ways to improve bilateral relations and worked on preparing upcoming international events and high-level meetings, including upcoming talks between the leaders of Russia, China and Mongolia on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Qingdao.
The Mongolian delegation comprised directors of different departments of the Foreign Ministry and representatives of the Mongolian embassy in Moscow. On MGIMO’s side, the meeting was also attended by the University’s Vice-Rector for General Affairs, Artem Malgin, and members of the faculty.
During the interview, the sides spoke about a myriad of issues related to Russian-Mongolian relations and considered the possibility of holding the next International Forum of MGIMO Graduates in Ulaanbaatar in 2020. MGIMO has a tradition of cooperation with Mongolian universities and there are currently 42 Mongolian citizens studying at the University. Since 1946, over 500 students from Mongolia have graduated from MGIMO and occupy key positions in the country’s state structures and private sector.
After the meeting, the Minister met with students who learn Mongolian and spoke about current matters of International Relations. While introducing the guest to the audience, the Rector noted that the Foreign Minister has made his University proud with his outstanding career.
