Exhibition for 40th Anniversary of UN Vienna International Center

December 2nd, the exhibition celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Vienna International Center of the United Nations opened in the atrium of MGIMO’s new building.

The Vice-Rector for Human Resources V. Morozov greeted the audience and remarked that MGIMO has been successfully cooperating with the United Nations for many years on a myriad of different issues. The Vice-Rector also underlined the fact that MGIMO is one of the leading universities in terms of the number of its graduates working in the UN system. Students benefit from a large choice of different internship opportunities and have great prospects for professional growth in international organizations like the United Nations.

Robert Gerschner, Plenipotentiary Minister at the Austrian Embassy in Moscow reminded all present that Vienna, along with New York, Geneva and Nairobi, is one of the four UN headquarters. The Vienna International Center has witnessed forty years of diplomacy in the heart of Europe. The UN City is home to many international organizations and hosts a large number of international meetings. Today, an estimated five thousand employees from 125 countries work in the network of UN organizations based in Vienna and dedicate their time to improving the life of people around the world. Robert Gerschner extended his thanks to the guests for their interest in the anniversary celebrations and the work of the UN.

The Deputy Chairman of the UN Association of Russia, Vice-President of the World Federation of UN Associations A. Borisov, remarked that in 2020, the world community would celebrate the 75th anniversary of the United Nations. The UN Association of Russia, acting on behalf of Russian Foreign Minister S. Lavrov and with the help of the Russian Foreign Ministry, the UN Information Center in Moscow and the UN Country Team in Russia, play a key coordination role in organizing the celebrations for the upcoming anniversary.

In the framework of the anniversary celebrations, the UN-75 Committee jointly with the Austrian Embassy and MGIMO have organized a thematic exhibition on the history and role of the UN, and the life of the «UN City». Anniversary celebrations are a good opportunity to attract attention to the UN’s mission of peacekeeping and ensuring security. The exhibits will be displayed in the Atrium of MGIMO’s new building from December 2nd to 6th.
