May 12th, the Special Adviser and Assistant Secretary-General for Climate Action Selwin Hart came to MGIMO where he was received by the Rector of the University A.Torkunov and gave a talk to students.
The guest of honor was introduced to the audience by the Vice-Rector for Development A.Malgin and the Head of the UNESCO Chair, First Deputy Chairman of the United Nations Association of Russia A.Borisov.
S.Hart devoted his lecture to sustainable development and the target of reaching carbon neutrality by the middle of the century. He highlighted the main challenges facing the world community in order to reach this goal, including the need to reduce CO2 emissions, to keep the average global temperature rise at 1.5 degrees Celsius and to switch to electric energy.
The topic of S.Hart's speech is one of the key topics being researched at MGIMO. The University actively promotes the environmental agenda and sustainable development issues. This year, the University opened a Center for Sustainable Development, and is enrolling students for the new master's programs "Environmental Management in the Corporate Sector" and "Sustainable Development Management".
The lecture was followed by a Q&A session during which graduate and post-graduate students were very active.
The meeting was also attended by the Dean of the School of Applied Economics and Commerce N.Zagrebelnaya, the Scientific Director of MGIMO’s Center for Sustainable Development I.Yurgens and the Head of the Department of Integrated International Ecological Problems and Wildlife Management R.Aliev.
