MGIMO Welcomes Jacek Palkiewicz

9 November 2017

November 9th, the famous Polish journalist, writer, traveler and explorer, also a member of the Russian Geographical Society, Jacek Palkiewicz gave a talk at MGIMO.

The guest was greeted by the University’s Vice-Rector for General Affairs Artem Malgin, who introduced the traveler to an audience of students and members of the faculty. Jacek Palkiewicz is a fellow of the London-based Royal Geographical Society and belongs to many prestigious organizations.

During his lecture, the guest gave a fascinating account of the many different expeditions he went on during his life, depicting his journey through the Gobi and Sahara deserts riding on camels, his adventure in Borneo, his exploration of Oymyakon pulled by reindeers and crossing the Atlantic Ocean alone in a lifeboat.

In the 1980’s, Jacek Palkiewicz opened the Survival School in Europe, which trained antiterrorist brigades for operations in jungles and deserts, as well as astronauts and rescuers. He dedicated himself to understanding the physical and mental capabilities of human beings in extreme situations. Mulling over the topic of fear, the guest encouraged students not to be ashamed of it but to learn how to overcome it. The presentation was followed by many questions from an enthralled audience.
