Opening of World Festival of Youth and Students in Sochi

October 15th, a grand ceremony marking the opening of the XIX World Festival of Youth and Students took place in Sochi. The event gathered over 50 thousand participants and organizers from 180 countries. The festivities were broadcasted live on the main Russian TV channels and on the Internet.

The official WFYS opening ceremony in Sochi was attended in person by Russian President Vladimir Putin, who welcomed the participants, volunteers, speakers and organizers. The Russian leader expressed the wish that all young people attain their goals and noted that people create their future and should always look and move forward.

A show based on the topic «Awakening» and comprising musical performances by famous Russian singers, was followed by an appeal to young people by the Chairman World Federation of Democratic Youth, Nicholas Papadimitriou, to fight against imperialism, fascism, nationalism, poverty and other threats of the 21st century.

The audience was next shown videos recalling the history of the festival and celebrating the achievements of its honorary participants, who made incredible contributions to solving major problems on a global scale. The show ended with the performance of the very famous music band One Republic.

The opening ceremony was attended by MGIMO Rector Anatoly Torkunov, and the University’s Vice-Rectors Artem Malgin and Igor Loginov.
