On April 2nd, a meeting with Mr. Bennett Murray, the Bureau Chief for the Deutsche Presse-Agentur (German Press Agency) in Hanoi, took place at MGIMO. The meeting was moderated by Mr. Anton Tsvetov, the Center for Strategic Research.
Mr. Anton Tsvetov welcomed guests and briefly described the lecturer’s varied career and his journalistic practice in Southeast Asia. Mr. Bennett Murray served as a reporter in Myanmar, Cambodia, and Vietnam. His articles are published in such leading international newspapers as Foreign Policy, The Diplomat, Guardian, Southeast Asia Globe, Politico and South China Morning Post.
The question-and-answer session launched an open and honest discussion between Mr. Bennet Murray and students. He shared his views on Vietnamese domestic and foreign policies and outlined the role of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) in the socio-political life of the country. The discussion also covered socio-cultural issues, and the speaker highlighted some of the divisions between North and South of Vietnam. Mr. Bennet Murray told the audience what the Vietnamese youth are interested in. He also commented on recent developments in Myanmar and Cambodia.
With reference to certain features of working as a foreign correspondent in Southeast Asia, Mr. Bennet Murray shared with students his own experience and outlined key issues that are covered in the Vietnamese mass-media as well as in the leading regional press. The meeting concluded with Q&A session.
Among the attendees were Deputy Dean of School of International Relations, ASEAN Centre’s Senior Expert Dr. Ekaterina Koldunova, Professor of Department of Chinese, Vietnamese, Laotian and Thai Languages Dr. Svetlana Glazunova, and students from MGIMO and the Institute of Asian and African Studies MSU majoring in South East Asian studies, and Vietnamese students studying in MGIMO.
