14 May 2019

May 14th, a round table on «Current Political Dynamics in the Indo-Pacific Region» was held at MGIMO with the participation of the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Russian Federation, Dayan Jayatilleka.

The guests were greeted by the University’s Vice-Rector for Graduate and International Programs Andrey Baykov, who remarked that this was not the Ambassador’s first visit to MGIMO. Indeed Dayan Jayatilleka had a meeting in December with MGIMO Rector Anatoly Torkunov, during which they agreed to jointly organize a number of cultural and educational events. This round table was set up in the framework of the previous agreement. Andrey Baykov also conveyed to the guest the University’s condolences in connection with the terrorist attacks in Sri Lanka.

The Ambassador opened the round table by giving a presentation on the military-strategic situation in the Indo-Pacific region and Sri Lanka’s role in the processes unfolding in South Asia and the Asia-Pacific Region. The Director of MGIMO’s ASEAN Center Viktor Sumsky, the Professor of the Oriental Studies Department Sergey Lunev, the Director of the Center for Comprehensive Chinese Studies and Regional Projects Alexei Voskressensky and other members of the faculty spoke about the political, military, strategic and economic aspects of cooperation in the region. The round table was moderated by the Deputy Dean of the School of International Relations (Graduate Programs), Associate Professor of the Department of Oriental Studies, Leading Expert at the ASEAN Centre, Ekaterina Koldunova. After the academic discussion, the Ambassador delivered a lecture to students of the University and took questions from the audience.
