MGIMO at International Meeting of High Representatives for Security Issues

25 May 2017

May 24th-25th in Zavidovo (Tver region), the 8th International Meeting of High Representatives for Security Issues took place. MGIMO Rector Anatoly Torkunov acted as moderator of the round table dedicated to the political and military situation in the Asia-Pacific region.

On the agenda of this year’s conference were international information security and fighting against international organized crime. The growing international reach of the meeting was reflected by the number of foreign participants (from 95 states) and the presence of UN representatives. Indeed, the format of the meeting undergoes slight changes each year, in order to take into account the recommendations made by guests.

An original feature of this year’s conference was a round table organized to discuss issues, which were not on the agenda but generate general international concern. On this occasion, participants decided to mull over the military and political situation in the Asia-Pacific region. MGIMO Rector Anatoly Torkunov was invited to moderate the discussion by the Secretary of the Russian Security Council. The round-table was very popular and the topic provoked a lively debate.
