Konstantin Babkin, Rostselmash Co-Owner, Gives Lecture at MGIMO

1 April 2019

On March 28th a famous Russian industrialist, Konstantin Babkin, who serves as President of the Board of Novoe Sodruzhestvo and is co-owner of Rostselmash, spoke in the second cycle of public lectures organized by the MGIMO Corporate Governance and Project Management Department. His lecture was entitled «Will the Tractor Factory Move to Russia?» in which he shared his experiences and told about the challenges facing Russian businesses.

Boris Titov, Head of the Corporate Governance and Project Management Department and Presidential Commissioner for Entrepreneurs’ Rights, delivered welcoming remarks. He introduced the speaker and announced upcoming lectures in the series.

During the lecture, Konstantin Babkin talked about the history of Rostselmash, the creation of the harvester factory, and about the current state of the machine-building industry in Russia. He also discussed the peculiarities of producing farming equipment, shared his own vision of the industrial development and increasing competitiveness of the Russian economy, and presented his formula for economic growth.

The entrepreneur actively promotes modernisation of the Russian economy, connecting it with the objectives of state policy. He is sure that for the country to develop successfully there is a need for developing non-resource-based industries.

Babkin paid special attention to the international dimension of business, noting the importance of creating a specialised department in MGIMO under the Ministry of Agriculture, whose graduates — future experts in international relations and diplomats — would defend the country’s interests and «open international agricultural markets for Russian goods».

He concluded by comparing the conditions created for the big business in Russia and abroad and where the industrial sites of his company are situated, attempting to answer the main question of the lecture: will the tractor factory move to Russia?

The next event of the Corporate Governance and Project Management Department will be held on April 18th. Mikhail Kusnirovich, President of the Bosco di Ciliegi Supervisory Board, will give a lecture entitled: «How business creates the international image of the country».
