Lao Foreign Minister Gives Talks at MGIMO

June 15th, a delegation from the Lao People’s Democratic Republic led by Foreign Minister Saleumxay Kommasith came to MGIMO. The guest of honor had an interview with MGIMO Rector Anatoly Torkunov and gave a talk to an audience of professors, faculty members and students of the University.

Introducing the Minister, Anatoly Torkunov related the main milestones of Saleumxay Kommasith’s fast-moving career, graduating from MGIMO in 1992, working for years in the civil service and representing Laos at the UN from 2012 to 2013.

The Minister warmly greeted the audience, reminding them with enthusiasm that MGIMO is his alma mater. Saleumxay Kommasith’s speech was dedicated to the goals his country has set itself in terms of economic development and the measures taken by the government to ensure their realization. The Minister also dwelt on the role of Laos in ASEAN, the Laos chairmanship of the Association in 2016, and the perspectives for the dialogue partnership between Russia and ASEAN.

Following his presentation, the guest took questions from the audience on bilateral cooperation in the political, economic and educational spheres, and on the development priorities of Laos. The meeting was moderated by the Director of MGIMO’s ASEAN Center, Victor Sumsky.
