April 25th, the Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Mukhisa Kituyi came to MGIMO to talk to students and sign a cooperation agreement with the leadership of the University.
The event brought together representatives of Russia’s Ministry of Economic Development, the Director of the UN Information Center in Moscow Vladimir Kuznetsov, diplomats from the Russian Foreign Ministry and members of the UN Entrepreneurship Program «Empretec». On MGIMO’s side, the Vice-Rector for Human Resources Vladimir Morozov, the Dean of the School of International Economic Relations, Oleg Pichkov, the Dean of the School of Applied Economics and Commerce, Natalya Zagrebelnaya, and the Head of the UNESCO Chair at MGIMO Alexei Borisov participated in the discussions.
The guest was greeted and introduced to the audience by Vladimir Morozov, who remarked that while some positive trends can be associated with the globalization process; a large number of economic issues remain unresolved. UNCTAD plays a major role by helping countries benefit from economic integration, all the while reducing the risks associated with it.
The Secretary-General thanked the University for the opportunity to speak to students and delivered a lecture on multilateralism and international trade. Mukhisa Kituyi described the main functions of UNCTAD, spoke about the projects under way and underlined the fact that Russia, unlike most countries, which are reducing economic assistance, is actually increasing its foreign aid to other states.
Upon completing his speech, the Secretary-General answered questions about the prospects for international trade and food security in African countries. During his visit, the guest was taken on a tour of the University and presented with symbolic gifts.
