October 17th, in the framework of the Diplomatic Module, the Russian Ambassador-at-large Sergey Gubarev gave a lecture to students of MGIMO University on the Transnistrian conflict and Russia’s efforts to settle it.
The speaker noted that the complexity of the status of Transnistria is linked to the conflict of two fundamental principles: the right of peoples and nations to self-determination and the principle of preserving state sovereignty. Sergey Gubarev explained that in this particular case, federalization appears to be the only viable solution.
The Ambassador remarked that Russia’s peacekeeping initiatives over the past 25 years have helped avoid a reignition of the conflict. Russia’s participation in the «5 + 2» negotiation format and the documents our Country submitted (the 1997 Moscow memorandum and the Kozak Plan) reflect Russia’s desire to interact with all the parties to the conflict.
Upon completion of his speech, the Ambassador took questions from the audience and invited the students to undergo placements at the Foreign Ministry.
