Department of International Relations and Foreign Policy of Russia

The Department of International Relations and Foreign Policy of Russia is a broad educational and scientific center which studies history and modern period of international relations. Professors and teachers of the Department give lectures and classes in all of the MGIMO Schools.

The Department of International Relations and Foreign Policy of Russia is one of the oldest major MGIMO departments, which was founded in 1944. The Department upholds traditions inherited from the first professors and tutors who came from the Moscow University along with the School as well as from the MFA officials who are often engaged in the pedagogical and scientific work. For many decades the scientific and educational activities of the Department have determined the focus of the School of International Relations. The lecturers of the Department act as research advisors for the BA and MA theses for most of the students of the International Relations School.

An important stage in the development of the Department started when Professor Mikhail Narinsky, Doctor of History, a well-known scholar in history of international relations of the 20th century, became the Head of the Department in 1995. Under Professor Narinsky the Department of International Relations and Foreign Policy of Russia managed to achieve considerable progress in scientific and educational activities and strengthened its positions as the leading department in MGIMO.

In 2016 Boris Martynov, professor, Doctor of Political Sciences, a well-known Russian scholar who specialises in Latin America, became the Head of the Department. The Department plans to stick to the development strategy adopted under Professor Narinsky, keeping and increasing the potential of the personnel to achieve new targets in educational and scientific work.

Research Activities. International Scientific Ties

The Department of International Relations and Foreign Policy of Russia actively promotes the development of international ties of MGIMO University. In the second half of the 1990s the Department coordinated the cooperation on the Tempus-TACIS project together with the University of Florence, Paris-Sorbonne University (Paris IV) and the University of London. The project allowed to expand professors’ and students’ international exchanges.

Today Professor Evgenia Obichkina is a research advisor of the joint «World Politics» MA programme with the Institute of Political Sciences Sciences-Po in Paris. Professor Boris Martynov and Professor Yuri Dubinin regularly participate in events under the auspices of BRICS, G8 and in Asia-Pacific. Mikhail Troitsky, Associate Professor, takes part in implementing Russian-American initiatives in science.

Boris Martynov, Head of the Department of International Relations and Foreign Policy of Russia, is an editor in several journals which are published in Latin American countries in Spanish and Portuguese. In 2015 he wrote a chapter devoted to the prospects of security cooperation between the Russian Federation and Latin American states in a collective research which was published by the Ministry of Defense of Argentina.

The lecturers of the Department regularly give lectures abroad and participate in international conferences, publish articles in scientific journals. A number of papers were completed and devoted to the 70th Anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War.
