The School of International Relations is the oldest one at MGIMO. It was founded in 1943 as a School of International Relations at the Moscow State University, with the outstanding professor I.Udaltsov its first dean. In 1944 the School became a separate Institute of International Relations. After integration with the Institute of Oriental Studies in 1954, the Western and the Eastern divisions were formed, and their students focused on the corresponding global regions.
In 1994 the School introduced a Bachelor program. Today it teaches 52 foreign languages, including rare European and Oriental languages. Among the faculty members there are many famous professors and unique experts, including Ambassadors Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Honored Scientists of the Russian Federation, historians, country study experts, economists and linguists. Thanks to grants from the Potanin Foundation, the best students have an opportunity to practice at Russian embassies and consulates overseas.
School alumni constitute the core of the young graduates accepted every year into the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Graduates also choose to work at government bodies, ministries and departments, and international organizations. Russian and international school alumni hold senior diplomatic positions around the world.
