Insurance is an essential element of a risk management system and increasing volatility of national and global economies makes it even more vital for the successful economic development. In order to create professionals in this field in September 1993, the department of insurance was established at the faculty of the International Economic Relations of MGIMO University. At its origins were insurance professionals: profs. M.Shiminova and C.Tourbina, head of the department prof. R.Yuldashev. Since 2010, after the thematic expansion of the disciplines taught, the it has been renamed into the department of risk management and insurance.
Now these famous names are presented among professors team: A.Arkhipov, N.Adamchuk, I.Yurgens (science consultant of magister education in MGIMO), S.Asabina, L.Tsvetkova. Since September 2020 department is headed by prof. Capitolina Tourbina. New generation of teachers includes E.Aldukhova and V.Barabanova, graduated from MGIMO magister program.
Educational and methodical base of training of bachelors and postgraduates is constantly improving and updating. Several courses on insurance and risk management have been developed. Focus of professional and scientific competences is determined by the needs of international and Russian insurance companies, financial institutions, audit organizations and entrepreneurs of a wide profile. The main emphasis of education is building up the knowledge and skills in using modern methods of risk management for the widest possible range of economical agents.
Educational and training activity is developing in a close contact with the leading Russian and international insurance companies, insurance brokers, audit companies, and other major employers for the graduates. Such long-term cooperation allows to invite highly qualified specialists with different profiles of knowledge for extension of practical skills of students and undergraduates be master classes, tutoring, and special programs as “Cyber risks and information security”. Passing on this basis of pre-graduate practice allows graduates to get an interesting high-paying job and make a brilliant professional career.
Research work of the department significantly expands the boundaries of main disciplines, strengthening their scientific base. The department annually holds a highly appreciated in scientific circles specialized international conference; professors, graduate students and postgraduates are regular participants of Russian and international conferences organized by the professionals and scientific community. During these years department have been graduated 4 Doctors of Economy, more than 40 PhDs, more than 120 master's theses have been successfully passed, which all together made a significant contribution to Russian insurance science.
Starting from March 2021 Department is actively involved in the research and tutoring courses focused on substantial development and ESG basing on cooperation with All-Russian insurance Union, and within MGIMO Center for substantial development and magister program “Management of substantial development”.
