Honorable scientist of the Russian Federation
Professor Tatiana Shakleina is a well-known specialist in international studies, American and Russian foreign policy, Russian-American relations. For a long time she worked in a prestigious and well-known think-tank — Institute of the USA and Canada Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences, where she was the Head of the Department of Foreign Policy Studies. In 2006 she got a very prestigious Award by the Russian Academy of Sciences «Academician E. Tarle Award in History» as a coauthor of a 4-volume monograph «Systemic History of International Relations (ed. by A.Bogaturov).
Professor Shakleina came to MGIMO University in 2006, and in 2007 was appointed Chair of the Department of Applied International Analysis. This Department was established in 2006 to improve preparation of diplomats and IR specialists giving them profound knowledge in theory and practice of applied political research to develop professional analytical skills so necessary in diplomatic service, in government agencies and think tanks. One of very important tasks for the Department was to continue and develop the School of structural analysis of international relations that was originally founded in MGIMO University in 1960s and 1970s. Professor Shakleina together with Professors M.Khrustalev and A.Bogaturov, who were among the founders of the MGIMO School of structural analysis, worked out the concept of teaching applied analysis, and was among those who prepared several basic text-books for master programs: «Megatrends. World Order Evolution in the 21st Century» (ed. by T.Shakleina and A.Baykov, 2013, 2014); «Introduction to Applied Analysis» (ed. by T.Shakleina, 2014, 2017); «International Relations in Central Asia» (ed. by A.Bogaturov, 2011, 2014) «Contemporary World Politics. Applied Analysis» (ed. by A.Bogaturov, 2010); T.Shakleina «Russia and the United States in World Politics» (2012; 2017, 2nd ed. ), etc. Many of the books prepared by T.Shakleina and her colleagues got awards from the Russian Political Science Association, government agencies, and the Russian Academy of Sciences. In 2014 T.Shakleina was awarded the Medal «For the Development of Science» named after Great Russian Philosopher Ivan Ilyin, for the input into academic studies.
Professor Shakleina supervises annual publication of the series «Situational Analyses» that is devoted to the most important problems of world development (6 monographs were published since in 2011-2020). This research project is inter-disciplinary and inter-institutional. In 2012 T. Shakleina was awarded Badge of Honor of the Security Council of the Russian Federation for the successful realization of joint analytical work and comprehensive research of security issues.
Professors of the Department teach 47 disciplines for bachelor and master programs — «Global Politics and Political and International Analysis», «Foreign Policy and Diplomacy of the Russian Federation», all double diploma programs (Russian-German, Russian-Italian, Russian-French, Russian-Chinese); Russian-English programs — «Governance and Global Affairs» and «International Relations in Eurasia. Politics. Economics. Ideology. Professors of the Department worked out original 4-level methodology for preparation of highly qualified IR specialists and analysts (see information about the Department).
T. Shakleina is teaching several basic courses for Russian and Russian-English master programs: «Great Powers and Regional Subsystems in Contemporary World Politics»; «Eurasian Regional Subsystem»; «Methodology of Political Research», «Trends of Contemporary International Relations (Post-graduate level); «World Order and Instruments of Global Regulation». At the bachelor level Professor Shakleina teaches «Applied Foreign Policy Research».
T. Shakleina initiated annual competitions for students’ analytical works. Russian and foreign students willingly participate, get awards and diplomas which they use after they graduate and look for work in various government and private agencies and companies. Students of master programs and post-graduates are invited to take part in research projects conducted by the faculty of the department, and in seminars and conferences.
In 2016 the Department celebrated its first 10 years. Its work and achievements were highly estimated by the Rector of the University and the Foreign Ministry. T. Shakleina was awarded Badge of Merit of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation and Badge of Merit of MGIMO University. In 2017 T. Shakleina’s contribution to the development of education and science was highly appreciated by the Medal «For Sacrificial Service». In 2018 she was awarded a special Diploma in honor of 75th Anniversary of the International Relations Faculty of MGIMO University, and in 2019 MGIMO award in honor of 75th Anniversary of MGIMO University.
In 2021 the Department celebrated 15 years of its work. To celebrate this date professors of the department prepared a new edition of the fundamental book «Megatrends», and Professor Shakleina finished a new version of the monograph «Russia and the United States in Contemporary International Relations». In 2021 Professor Shakleina was awarded the status of Honorable Scientist of the Russian Federation.
Professor Shakleina is well known not only in Russia, but also in many foreign countries. Being a distinguished specialist in American studies, she participated in many American-Russian and multilateral research projects, conducted research at the Georgetown University, School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University, Maryland University; has fruitful academic relations with the University of San Diego (California), Augsburg University (Minneapolis, USA), St. Edward’s University (Austin, USA), St. Mary College (USA); McKenna College (USA); with famous think-tanks like Center for Strategic and International Studies, Hudson Institute, Brookings Institution, CATO Institute, etc. Since 1992 Professor Shakleina has been the member of the International Studies Association (USA), and participates in its conventions annually.
Since 2006 T. Shakleina is included into «Marquis Who’s Who in the World», and since 2007 — into «Dictionary of International Biography» (Cambridge, Great Britain), for achievements in political science.
