February 27th, MGIMO Rector Anatoly Torkunov welcomed a delegation from Uzbekistan comprising the Head of Department of the Security Council under the President of Uzbekistan and former Minister of Foreign Economic Affairs, Investments and Trade, Elyor Ganiev, and the Ambassador of Uzbekistan to Russia Bahrom Ashrafhanov.
During the meeting, the sides discussed current international issues, noted the rapid development of bilateral relations between Russia and Uzbekistan and the need to reinforce the partnership, particularly in the sphere of education.
Elyor Ganiev spoke about the positive role played by MGIMO in training diplomats and experts for the Republic of Uzbekistan and expressed the desire to reinforce mutually beneficial cooperation with the University. One of the projects under consideration is the opening of a branch of MGIMO University in Tashkent.
The Rector underlined the high level of preparation of candidates from Uzbekistan and remarked that MGIMO would be participating from April 20th to 25th in an educational exhibition, which will be held in Tashkent, Samarkand and Bukhara.
The sides discussed the activities of MGIMO’s Alumni Association in Uzbekistan, agreed to work on the implementation of joint educational programs and considered the possibility of holding an MGIMO Alumni Forum in Uzbekistan.
