The MGIMO School of Governance and International Affairs (SGIA) has held a series of events «UN Day at SGIA» on October 23 on the eve of the International Day of the United Nations. During the whole day the students of MGIMO had an opportunity to get acquainted with the UN activity and its role in the modern world. The opening event of the day was a lecture of the leading UN-officials in Russia Vladimir Kuznetsov and Alexander Avanesov for the students of the School. The event was organised by the renewed Future World Diplomats Club team, which for many years has been assigned to SGIA as MGIMO’s only fully English-speaking club.
Head of the UN Information Centre in Moscow Vladimir Kuznetsov told in his part of the lecture about the historical aspects of the development of the Organisation, emphasising the role of the UN in the world processes today. In addition, he also highlighted the activities of the UN Information Centre in Moscow, noting that MGIMO and SGIA have been friends and reliable partners of the UN for many years already.
Alexander Avanesov, Manager of the UNDP Global Programme on Preventing Violent Extremism, shared his own experience of diplomatic service, telling the students about his career path at the UN. His speech also focused on the supranational nature of the United Nations.
Following the speeches of the guests, the students had a unique opportunity to ask questions on the UN system: on the reform of the UN Security Council in modern conditions, the role of the Secretary-General, the process of financing the Organisation and many others.
The management of MGIMO and SGIA thank the guests for their speeches and look forward to continued co-operation in more formats and events.
