New South Korean Ambassador Meets with MGIMO Rector

February 12th, the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Russia, Woo Yoon Keun, came to MGIMO for a meeting with the University’s Rector Anatoly Torkunov and the Vice-Rector for Graduate and International Programs, Andrey Baykov.

During their interview, the guest expressed the desire to expand cooperation between Russia and the Republic of Korea and underlined the positive trend in trade and economic relations between the two countries.

The parties also mulled over academic collaboration and more specifically the promotion of Korean Studies in Russia. The Ambassador noted his readiness to consider the possibility of allocating grants to MGIMO experts as well as to students studying the Korean language.

In turn, Anatoly Torkunov described how Korean Studies are organized at the University and mentioned the remarkable researcher Valentina Dmitrieva, whose 90th anniversary was recently celebrated at MGIMO. The Rector also spoke about the cultural ties between the two countries and noted that there are currently more that forty South Korean citizens studying at MGIMO.

At the end of the meeting, Anatoly Torkunov answered the Ambassador’s questions on bilateral relations, Russia’s position on the Korean crisis and the geopolitical balance in the region.
