SPIEF-2019. MGIMO’s Beyond Diplomacy

June 6th, the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum starts its work. MGIMO will present its novel interdisciplinary programs and initiatives in public and academic diplomacy. MGIMO will hold a booth in Pavilion G, in partnership with Corteva™ Agriscience.

This year, MGIMO has contributed to the forum by setting up several platforms for discussions. The session “Trialogue of dialogues: St. Petersburg, Sochi and Trianon” (G5 conference hall, June 6th, starts at 09:00) looks at the different bilateral interaction mechanisms between Russia and Western countries, such as the Russian-German Petersburg public forum, the Russian-French Trianon dialogue and the Russian-Austrian Sochi dialogue. Among the panellists invited are the heads of the coordination councils of these platforms, including the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Gazprom Viktor Zubkov, the Executive Director of the Petersburg Dialogue Forum Martin Hoffmann, MGIMO Rector Anatoly Torkunov, Ambassador Pierre Morel, the Aide to the Russian President Andrey Fursenko, the Honorary President of the Austrian Economic Chamber Christoph Leiti.

The panel of the Sochi Dialogue (G5 conference hall, June 6th, starts at 11:00) deals with the “Economy of Culture”, exploring intercultural interaction, the observance of cultural equality principles, and free cultural exchange as essential aspects of an effective mutually beneficial partnership of national economies. The co-chairs of the Sochi Dialogue Andrey Fursenko and Christoph Leiti, the Director of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts Marina Loshak, the General Director General of the State Tretyakov Gallery Zelfira Tregulova, the General Director of the Vienna Museum of Art History Sabine Haag, the Director of the Austrian Cultural Forum in Moscow Simon Mraz, the Dean of the Faculty of Economics at Moscow State University Alexander Auzan will all participate in the panel. The discussion will be moderated by Mikhail Shvydkoy, the Special Representative of the Russian President for International Cultural Cooperation.

The exchange of views on public diplomacy projects will continue during the press conference “MGIMO’s Beyond Diplomacy. Informal Dialogues and Interdisciplinary Competences ”(June 6th, Press Center, hall H3, starts at 13:00).

The Trianon Dialogue section (G5 conference hall, June 6th, starts at 3:00 pm) deals with the central topic of the forum for 2019 - “Education of the Future”. Participants will review the Russian and French experiences and best practices in the sphere of higher education: exchange programs and networking, the modernization of university campuses and innovative projects. The Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Russian Technology Foundation Dominique Fache, the Director of International Relations of the Conservatoire National Des Arts et Metiers Sebastien Leonsel, the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Orange Group Gervais Pellissier, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Siradel SAS Laurent Bouillot and the Executive Vice President for Industry Solutions, Marketing, Global Affairs and Communications of Dassault Systemes SE Florence Verzelen, the Director General of the Russian Public Opinion Research Center Valery Fedorov, the Rector of MGIMO University Anatoly Torkunov, the Rector of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology State University Nikolay Kudryavtsev, the Rector of Tomsk State University Eduard Galazhinsky, the Rector of the Higher School of Economics Yaroslav Kuzminov are all speakers at this panel.

During the session of the Russia-France business dialogue (Conference Hall D3, June 6th, Starts at 16:45), participants will discuss how to expand bilateral cooperation and focus on investments and new technologies.

During a session on corporate social responsibility as a driver of sustainable development (Conference Hall D2, June 6th, starts at 16:45) organized by the United Nations Association of Russia and the Embassy of Switzerland in Russia, participants will discuss the necessary conditions for successful economic development. Among the invited speakers: Marie-Gabrielle Ineichen-Fleisch, Director of the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs, the Deputy Minister of Economic Development of Russia Ilya Torosov, and representatives of Norilsk Nickel, Rosatom, Nestlé SA, PepsiCo ESSA, and others. The session will have for moderator the Secretary-General of the United Nations Association of Russia and Vice President of the World Federation of United Nations Associations also Head of the UNESCO Chair at MGIMO Alexey Borisov.

June 7th, at MGIMO’s stand and with the attendance of the Deputy Minister of Agriculture of Russia, MGIMO will sign an agreement with Corteva ™ Agriscience on the creation of a master program “World Agrarian Markets”. During this event, MGIMO will also sign cooperation agreements with several Russian regions.

June 8th, the EAEU-ASEAN business dialogue will hold a session (F1 conference room, starts at 10:00). The participants will discuss the opportunities and advantages the EAEU offers for businesses, how to attract foreign partners and investments, and how ASEAN countries can take advantage of this. They will also review the main problems and challenges of developing trade and business collaboration between EAEU and ASEAN members. The section will be attended by the Executive Secretary of ESCAP Armida Salsiah Alijhahbana, the Chairman of the Russia-ASEAN Business Council Ivan Polyakov, the Senior Managing Director, Head of Sberbank’s Analytical Directorate Yaroslav Lissovolik, the President of the ASEAN Business Club Mohd Munir Abdul Madjid and the Director of the ASEAN Center at MGIMO Viktor Sumsky.

During the youth day, MGIMO is organizing a session “Up and Up – Preparing leaders who won’t just change the world but make it better” (June 8th, G8 conference hall, starts at 12:00). Those attending will discuss current challenges in the field of education, how to train experts who are professionally skilled and can take responsibility for global development.

The MGIMO Economic Club has organized a model on Russia and the World: Creating Competitiveness (June 8th, G6 conference hall, starts at 12:00), which takes the form of an interactive game for students, young experts and entrepreneurs who want to find out more about investment policies and technological cooperation. The model has for objective to put in touch young people with a common interest in developing foreign economic relations.

MGIMO has also jointly organized with the organization Delovaya Rossiya a session on Russia and travel services entitled “Flying to Russia: Tourism Industry Development to Boost Welfare” (June 8th, G9 conference hall, starts at 10:00).
