Saudi Ambassador Visits MGIMO

On April 20th, the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the Russian Federation Abdulrahman Bin Suleiman Al Ahmed visited the University within the framework of the special course of lectures entitled “The Ambassadorial Dialogues”.

The distinguished guest was received by the Rector Anatoly Torkunov and the Vice-Rector for Human Resources Vladimir Morozov. The parties discussed cooperation between MGIMO and Saudi universities as well as prospects for more intense joint academic and research activities.

Having met with the University’s officials, the Ambassador delivered a lecture to the students on the history of cooperation between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Russia, the current state of the bilateral relations and prospects for their development. The honored guest noted that since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries their aspiration to maintain a constructive dialogue has brought some progress in several areas.

Among the promising areas of cooperation between Saudi Arabia and Russia Abdulrahman Bin Suleiman Al Ahmed singled out trade and economic relations, joint investment projects, interaction concerning culture, science, education and tourism as well as energy cooperation. His Excellency stressed that the relations between the countries are based on mutual trust conducive to their successful development.

After the lecture, the diplomat took questions from the audience on Saudi-Russian student exchange programs, prospects for a ceasefire in Yemen, opportunities for cooperation between the two countries in modern art, digital technologies and sports as well as the impact of the pandemic on the life in Saudi Arabia.

During the event the consecutive interpretation from Arabic to Russian was provided by the Senior Lecturer and Deputy Head of the Department of Middle East Languages Nikolay Pantyukhin and MA students specializing in Arabic.
