A.Torkunov Participates in Russian-Uzbek Conference of Rectors

May 27th, the Interregional Conference of Russian and Uzbek Universities’ Rectors took place remotely.

The goal of the online meeting was to assess the progress of bilateral educational and scientific projects and mull over new paths for interuniversity cooperation ahead of the Second Russian-Uzbek Educational Forum to be held in Moscow in autumn.

The meeting was kicked off by its moderators: the President of the Russian Rectors’ Union, Rector of Moscow State University M.Lomonosov V.Sadovnichy and the Chairman of the Republican Council of Higher Education, Rector of the Tashkent Institute of Irrigation and Agricultural Mechanization Engineers U.Umurzakov.

The audience was greeted by the Head of the Russian President’s Office on Inter-regional and Cultural Relations with Foreign Countries V.Chernov, the Aide to the President of Uzbekistan A.Abduvakhitov, the Russian Minister of Science and Higher Education V.Falkov and the Uzbek Minister of Higher and Secondary Special Education I.Majidov.

MGIMO Rector A.Torkunov and the First Deputy Minister of Energy of Uzbekistan, Chairman of Uzkimyosanoat Z.Mirzamakhmudov gave talks during the plenary session.

In his speech, A.Torkunov described the main activities of MGIMO’s Tashkent branch, underlined the importance of active cooperation with universities in Uzbekistan, and emphasized the need to use innovative practices in education, including developing synergies between exact sciences and the humanities. The Rector noted that it is possible to receive training in both areas simultaneously. The idea of developing such formats of education was first raised by Russian President V.Putin.

In the afternoon, the Rectors pursued working discussions in separate sessions.

The first Russian-Uzbek Forum of Rectors took place in October 2018 in Tashkent.
