Russian-American Legal Seminar at MGIMO

June 27th, MGIMO hosted a Russian-American seminar dedicated to legal issues.

The opening speech was made by MGIMO’s Vice-Rector for General Affairs, Artem Malgin, who extended a warm welcome to the American guests. The event was attended by the Dean of MGIMO’s School of International Law, Gennady Tolstopyatenko, and the Head of the International Law Section of the Florida Bar Association, Lucius Smejda.

The meeting was presided over by the Chairman of the Executive Committee of the World Federation of United Nations Associations, and Head of the UNESCO Chair, Alexei Borisov. The International Law Section of the Florida Bar, the International Law Section of the American Bar Association and the Russian-American Bar Association all acted as partners of the event.

The seminar gathered lawyers, experts, professors and professionals specializing in International Law, to review the legal framework for investments, tax legislation and arbitration. A myriad of legal issues were discussed, all relating to the harmonization of business relations between Russia and America. Some participated in person, while others made their presentations through the internet.

The outcome of the seminar was assessed as positive and the legal community of both countries expressed an interest in organizing similar seminars in the future.
