June 6th, the international rating agency Quacquarelli Symonds published its fifteenth ranking of the best universities in the world, the «QS World University Ranking» (WUR). This year, MGIMO rose from 373rd to 355th place.
QS WUR was first published in 2004 and has since then become widely known in the academic, professional and student community as one of the three main international rankings of universities. Universities from 85 countries participated in this year’s ranking and the country with the highest number of universities presented is the United States (157) followed by Great Britain (76), Germany (45), Japan (44) and China (40). Russia was represented by 27 universities, three more than last year.
Universities are assessed in this ranking according to six criteria: Academic Reputation (40%), Employer Reputation (10%), Citations per Faculty (20%), Student to Faculty ratio (20%), International Faculty ratio and International Student ratio (5% each).
MGIMO has consistently made it into the top 400 universities of the world since 2011 and over the last five years has climbed in the world ranking by 31 points. This progress took place against the backdrop of a very intensive competition of humanities but also technical and research universities. MGIMO is indeed the only humanities university in Russia to have made it into the top 400 QS ranking.
MGIMO’s international partners also performed well in the ranking, with the University of St. Andrews taking the 97th place, the University of Geneva the 108th, the Free University of Berlin the 130th place, the University of Barcelona coming 166th, the University of Bologna 180th and the University of Reading 195th, to name just a few.
