Iraqi Vice President Nouri al-Maliki at MGIMO

July 24th, the Vice President of Irak, Nouri al-Maliki came to MGIMO during his visit to Moscow, and honored the memory of his mentor, a famous Iraqi Shiite theologian, jurist and philosopher Muhammad Baqir al-Sadr, whose sculpture is exhibited in the University’s Scientific Library named after I.Tyulin.

The Iraqi delegation met with MGIMO Rector Anatoly Torkunov, the Vice-Rector for General Affairs Artem Malgin, the Vice-Rector for Graduate and International Programs Andrey Baykov, and faculty members of the University.

The bust of Muhammad Baqir al-Sadr was given to MGIMO the year of the 70th anniversary of the establishment of Russian-Iraqi diplomatic relations, by the Iraqi embassy, as reciprocal gesture of friendship after the opening of a monument to Alexander Pushkin in 2011 at Baghdad University.

Anatoly Torkunov told the guest about MGIMO’s active cooperation with universities in Arab countries; among others: the Jordan Institute of Diplomacy and the University of Jordan, the Emirates Diplomatic Academy, Cairo University and the Institute of Diplomatic Studies (Egypt), the University of Birzeit (Palestine) and the Prince Saud Al-Faisal Institute for Diplomatic Studies (Saudi Arabia). The sides also made plans for MGIMO to establish contacts with the Diplomatic Academy of Iraq.
