MGIMO Welcomes Afghan Foreign Minister

February 25th, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan, Mohammad Haneef Atmar came to MGIMO. The guest met with the leadership of the University and gave a talk to students and faculty members.

MGIMO’s Vice-Rector A.Malgin extended a warm welcome to the guests. The meeting was attended by representatives of the Afghan Foreign Ministry and the Afghan Embassy in Moscow. On the Russian side, the Vice-Rector for Research and International Cooperation A.Baykov, the Vice-Rector for Social Work and Youth Policy S.Surovtsev, the Leading Research Fellow at the Center for East Asian and SCO Studies, former Russian Ambassador to Afghanistan M.Konarovsky all attended the meeting.

During his lecture, the Minister described the history of Russian-Afghan relations and spoke of their current-day characteristics, highlighting the key areas of bilateral cooperation related to the peaceful settlement of the situation in Afghanistan and the problems of countering terrorist threats and drug trafficking. M.Atmar noted that Afghanistan is ready at this time to build working relations with its regional and international partners.

The Afghan Foreign Minister expressed hope, at the end of the lecture, that friendly relations could be further developed with Russia and took questions from the audience.

During his official visit to Moscow, Mohammad Haneef Atmar will be received by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and other officials.
