Anatoly Torkunov Awarded Gold Sign «Miner of Russia»

31 August 2017

On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of Miner’s Day and the commemoration of the 295th year of coal mining in Russia, MGIMO Rector Anatoly Torkunov was awarded the gold sign «Miner of Russia».

This award was established in 2000 by the non-profit partnership «Miners of Russia» together with the Heraldic Council of the Russian President and is the most prestigious decoration for mining specialists and state officials who have contributed to the development of the mining sector. The gold sign was bestowed upon MGIMO Rector by the President of the Non-Commercial Partnership for Mining Industry Development Assistance, Georgy Krasniansky.

Anatoly Torkunov was bequeathed this honor for his contribution to education in the mining industry. The Rector is indeed one of the initiators of the Inter-University Education Center for the training of management experts for the Russian mining industry and MGIMO was one of the first universities to participate in the project.

Indeed, the mining sector currently requires employees not only with technological expertise but also understanding business processes, global financial markets and the impact of sociopolitical factors. The Center is working on the creation of various educational programs, including an MBA «Strategic Management in Mining Enterprises» to be launched in September 2017, and a dual MA in management implemented by MGIMO together with MISiS, scheduled to start in September 2018.
