Ambassador of Panama Comes to MGIMO

April 2nd, the Ambassador of Panama to Russia, Miguel Lecardo Barcenas, attended a meeting at MGIMO with students and lecturers of the University. The event was organized by MGIMO’s Ibero-American Center and the Department of Spanish.

The Ambassador was greeted by MGIMO’s Vice-Rector for Human Resources Vladimir Morozov, who together with the Senior Lecturer at the Department of Spanish Language Studies Alla Zenkovich, told the guest about MGIMO and its tradition of teaching Spanish. During the meeting, the sides discussed the possibility of launching a cooperation program between the University of Panama and MGIMO.

Miguel Lecardo Barcenas then gave a talk to students of the University, which he began by thanking MGIMO for the invitation. The guest highlighted the main events in his country’s history and noted that its geopolitical position had a significant impact on how it developed. The Ambassador took questions from the audience and provided detailed answers about the colonial past of Panama, the fight for independence from Spain, the construction of the Panama Canal, and the difficult relations with the United States.
