MGIMO Rector at Opening of Andrei Karlov Foundation

21 November 2017

November 20th, the residence of the Turkish Ambassador in Russia hosted the opening ceremony of a Charitable Foundation named after the Russian diplomat Andrei Karlov. The Foundation was created with the support of Russian and Turkish diplomats, businessmen and friends of Andrei Karlov.

The opening ceremony gathered a number of guests including Marina Karlova the diplomat’s widow, the Turkish Ambassador to Russia Huseyin Dirioz, MGIMO Rector and Chairman of the Foundation’s Board Anatoly Torkunov as well as the Dean of MGIMO’s School of International Journalism Yaroslav Skvortsov.

In his opening speech, the Rector noted that many people who didn’t know Andrei Karlov had volunteered to help create this Foundation. He also remarked that many MGIMO students had showed great enthusiasm about getting involved in the work of the Foundation.

Marina Karlova underlined that the Foundation had not been created to remember her husband but to avoid such a tragedy ever occurring again. The Foundation will have a wide scope of activities including promoting bilateral cultural cooperation, student exchanges and joint research.
