MGIMO at the International and European Tax Moot Court (KU Leuven) Tax Law Competition

12 May 2020

The results of the prestigious international tax law competition “International and European Tax Moot Court”, held by Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium) have been announced.

The MGIMO team, consisting of 2nd-year students of the Masters in International Finance Law Alina Ivanova and Polina Belyakina, passed a rigorous selection among students from the world’s leading universities and was ranked among the 16 best teams based on the assessment of their written position on the tax authority and taxpayer.

This year, the in-person oral rounds of the competition in Leuven were called off due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Hence, by way of an alternative, the 16 best teams were requested to send in their videotaped presentations. Based on the assessment of both memoranda and video recordings, the competition judges - IBFD members, practicing lawyers, well-known legal scholars and tax law experts – remarked upon the profound knowledge of international tax law displayed by the MGIMO team and their ability to come up with innovative solutions to the problems set.

The coach of the team was a Lecturer at the Department of the Theory of Law and Comparative Law Dina Osina. Assisting the team during the preparations were also the Dean of the International Law Faculty Prof. Gennady Tolstopyatenko and the Chair of the Department of Administrative and Financial Law Dr Ilya Goncharenko.
