December 15th, the Head of the Karachaevo-Cherkessia Republic of Russia, Rashid Temrezov, visited the University and attended a meeting with MGIMO students and other Moscow youth. The guest was received by MGIMO’s Vice-Rector for Graduate and International Programs, Andrey Baykov.
The Head of the Karachaevo-Cherkessia Republic began his speech by expressing hope that the students would contribute to the development of their region of origin as well as to Russia as a whole and by thanking the University’s Rector Anatoly Torkunov for his cooperation with the Karachaevo-Cherkessia Republic.
The guest went on to discuss in an interactive format with the students a myriad of issues including environmental challenges in the region and ecological measures being elaborated, waste management, the development of alternative sources of energy, higher education in the Republic, the employability of graduates and the region’s dependence on federal subsidies.
The students shared with Rashid Temrezov their idea to create a North Caucasus Agency for the Development of International Cooperation, which would run with the participation of MGIMO, and the guest expressed his readiness to lend his support to the initiative.
Students also discussed with the guest the opportunity to create in the Karachaevo-Cherkessia Republic a holiday resort for MGIMO and other universities and receive land for this purpose; to which the Head of the Republic agreed on principle. Indeed the guest noted the importance for the Region of developing its infrastructure and the tourism industry in order to ensure the social and economic development of the region as a whole.
