November 14th to 17th, in the framework of the strategic partnership program of MGIMO and the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, launched in October 2016, a delegation from our University went to Boston. The main feature of their visit was the first joint conference on Russian-American relations, which gathered Russian and American experts in International Security, Bilateral Relations and Political Economy.
The opening ceremony of the conference was attended by over 200 people, including prominent diplomats and academics such as Admiral James Stavridis, Dean of the School of Law and Diplomacy and the First Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the United Nations, Petr Iliichev.
MGIMO was represented at the event by its Vice-Rector for Graduate and International Programs Andrey Baykov, the Head of the Department of Oriental Studies Dmitry Streltsov, the Head of the Department of Applied International Political Analysis Tatiana Shakleina, the Director of the School of Government and International Affairs Mikhail Troitsky and other faculty members. The American side counted as speakers Paul Berkman and Daniel Drezner from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Jack Goldsmith and Joseph Nye from Harvard University and other experts.
During the conference, the participants mulled over a number of essential issues such as the structure of global governance, conflicts regarding information and cyber security, European problems, challenges in the Middle East and the situation on the Korean peninsula. The objective of the meeting was to bring out into the open and discuss the disagreements between Russia and the United States on international matters.
A second conference between MGIMO and the Fletcher School will be held in May 2018. During their visit to Boston, MGIMO representatives also attended meetings with their colleagues from the Fletcher School to discuss the implementation of dual MA programs and inter-university cooperation.
