September 28th, the Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba Emilio Lozada Garcia met with MGIMO’s Vice-Rector for Graduate and International Programs Andrey Baykov and gave a lecture to students of the University in Spanish.
The parties reflected on the opportunities to enhance cooperation in education between their countries. The Ambassador spoke with appreciation about the role played by the USSR and Russia in training Cuban specialists, many of whom occupy high positions in government. Emilio Lozada Garcia also noted that student and professor exchanges are instrumental in the strengthening of bilateral relations between the Republic of Cuba and Russia.
MGIMO’s Vice-Rector for Graduate and International Programs Andrey Baykov remarked that the time has indeed come for the two countries to consolidate their relationship in the sphere of education through student and professor exchange programs as well as joint projects. The Vice-Rector also underlined the opportunity to teach Cuban students, not only in English but in Russian, which is a huge asset for graduates on the labor market.
The meeting was also attended on the Russian side by the Chairman of the Board of MGIMO’s Ibero-American Centre Alexei Shestopal, the Director of the Centre Alla Zenkovich and the Head of the Department of the Spanish language Valerii Iovenko. Underlining the importance given by MGIMO to research oriented towards the Ibero-American world, Alexei Shestopal related the successful launch by the University of the magazine, «Ibero-American notebook».
After the meeting, the Ambassador delivered a lecture in Spanish in front of an audience of students.
