Turkish Foreign Minister Gives Talk at MGIMO

March 13th, during his official visit to Russia, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey Mevlut Cavusoglu came to the University where he met with MGIMO Rector Anatoly Torkunov and delivered a lecture on «The Foreign Policy of Turkey.»

In his welcome speech, Anatoly Torkunov noted that Russia and Turkey have successfully found areas for mutually beneficial cooperation and are actively developing their commercial and economic ties as well as restoring their relations in the sphere of tourism. While bilateral relations were not always simple historically, the friendship between the people has always helped overcome problems. The Rector also reminded the guest that the Turkish language has been taught for many years at MGIMO and before that at the Lazarev Institute. Over 50 people currently study Turkish as their first or second foreign language.

Mevlut Cavusoglu gave a talk about the foreign policy of Turkey, noting that bilateral relations are rapidly expanding in many spheres and that MGIMO contributes to improving the relationship by training diplomatic staff. The Minister underlined the many opportunities the two countries have for cooperation and spoke about recent joint infrastructure projects. Relations are also flourishing in other areas with 2019 having been announced as a cross-cultural year between Russia and Turkey. The Foreign Minister also emphasized the regional impact of bilateral relations and both countries’ role in strengthening security and fighting against terrorism.

During his visit, Mevlut Cavusoglu will meet with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov and discuss interaction in the political, military, commercial, cultural and economic spheres.
