January 23rd, the Executive Council of the ASEAN Center held its 16th meeting at MGIMO University. The event was attended by the Co-Chairman of the Council Thai Ambassador to Russia Thanatip Upatising, the Vietnamese Ambassador to Russia Ngo Duc Manh, the Ambassador of Singapore to Russia Lim Kheng Hua and the Ambassador of Indonesia to Russia Wahid Supriyadi.
On the Russian side, MGIMO Rector Anatoly Torkunov, the Co-Chairman of the Council Vice-Rector for General Affairs Artem Malgin, the Director of the ASEAN Center Viktor Sumsky and other representatives of the University and the Foreign Ministry participated in the meeting.
A report on the 2018 activities of the ASEAN Center together with the financial documents for the period 2017-2018 were presented to the Executive Council as well as a work plan for 2019. One of the most visible events held last year at MGIMO was the Inaugural Meeting of the Network of ASEAN-Russia Think Tanks (NARTT), which was designed to create a second track in the Russia-ASEAN dialogue. Among the events scheduled for 2019 were a second NARTT meeting at the end of 2019 in Jakarta, a fifth Russia-ASEAN Youth Summit in the Philippines, and a Russia-ASEAN Educational Forum.
The Council members made some practical recommendations to the Centre, encouraging it to work with experts from other think tanks and universities, and to fine-tune its strategic goals in the new global context. The members of the Executive Council thanked the Centre for its work in 2018.
