Anatoly Antonov Appointed Russian Ambassador to the United States

August 21st, Russian President Vladimir Putin appointed an MGIMO graduate, Anatoly Antonov, Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the United States.

In 1978, Anatoly Antonov graduated from MGIMO’s School of International Economic Relations and in 1983 obtained his PHD. He served his country within the Soviet and then Russian Foreign Ministry for over thirty years, both at home and abroad. From 2004 to 2011, he was Director of the Department for Security Affairs and Disarmament at the Foreign Ministry. In 2011, he was appointed Deputy Defense Minister of Russia. In 2016, he became Deputy Foreign Minister.

The diplomat has proved his worth during many international negotiation processes, heading Russian delegations in discussions with G8 countries, surrounding the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, the conventions on chemical and biological weapons and the new Treaty on Strategic Offensive Arms Reductions.

Anatoly Antonov has received many awards, including the Order for Merit to the Fatherland, the Order of Alexander Nevsky, the Order of Military Merit and the Order of Friendship.
