Allameh Tabataba'i University delegation visits MGIMO

A delegation from Allameh Tabataba'i University (Iran) that included Vice-President for Research Professor Davoud Hosseinpour, Director of International Academic Cooperation Dr Mousa Abdollahi and Counsellor of the Embassy of Iran to Russia Professor Hadi Goudarzi visited MGIMO University on 6 December. During the visit, the universities signed a Memorandum of Understanding.

MGIMO University was represented by Vice-Rector for Students’ Development and International Affairs Stanislav Surovtsev, Advisor to the MGIMO Supervisory Board Andrey Reshetnyak and Advisor to the MGIMO Supervisory Board, Deputy Vice-Rector Ekaterina Shuvalova, as well as Assistant Professor at the Department of International Relations and Foreign Policy of Russia Igor Matveev.

Stanislav Surovtsev welcomed the guests, spoke about MGIMO University's expanding cooperation with Iranian universities and stressed the growing interest in the region as a whole and in Iran in particular. The Vice-Rector said that MGIMO University had already been cooperating with Allameh Tabataba'i University for many years. For example, the School of International Relations' students learning Persian have regularly completed short-term language internships at summer and winter schools at this university. Also, lecturers at the Department of Indo-Iranian and African Languages had the opportunity to study under an advanced training program for those teaching the Persian language. In addition to the training, such internships included a extensive sightseeing program with visits to Tehran and other cities.

For his part, Professor Davoud Hosseinpour thanked the Vice-Rector for the opportunity to meet at MGIMO University. The Vice-President for Research shared the experience of the Iranian university in implementing various cooperation programs with several large Russian universities and highlighted the main areas of cooperation that could be of mutual interest to MGIMO University and ATU, for example joint master's degree programs in Regional Studies. The Faculty of Political Sciences is ready to act as a partner on behalf of ATU.

As a second priority, the parties discussed academic cooperation, including the implementation of joint grant projects, the preparation and publication of collective articles in cited journals, as well as the translation, publication and distribution of monographs. As a pilot project, ATU proposes to publish an interuniversity scientific journal on political topics.

ATU believes that the third area of cooperation with MGIMO University is the organization of regular mutual student, postgraduate and teaching staff exchanges. Vice-Rector Stanislav Surovtsev supported the initiatives of the guests.

Igor Matveev expressed MGIMO University's interest in establishing various forms of academic cooperation between researchers of the two universities, such as training sessions and master classes on analytics, as well as webinars on relevant topics with the participation of various MGIMO departments and its Institute for International Studies.

In order to formalize the agreements reached, Vice-Rector Stanislav Surovtsev and Vice-President Davoud Hosseinpour signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the two universities.
