Shanghai Cooperation Organization Secretary General Comes to MGIMO

December 8th, the Secretary General of the SCO, Rachid Alimov paid a visit to MGIMO. The guest had an interview with the Rector of the University Anatoly Torkunov and delivered a lecture to an audience of students and members of the faculty.

MGIMO’s Vice-Rector for Human Resources also attended the meeting. The sides discussed a possible cooperation agreement between the SCO Secretariat and MGIMO, relating to public diplomacy.

Rachid Alimov also gave a talk to MGIMO students about the different facets of cooperation in Eurasia and the role of the SCO, noting that one of the organization’s main priorities is solving regional problems. The Secretary General also underlined the fact that the SCO has a strictly «non-confrontational agenda» which comprises a number of issues relating to politics, security, the economy as well as cultural ties.

Indeed the SCO has no «enemies» and aims to promote joint development and peace in the region. The guest concluded that the SCO is an important element of the global architecture of international relations as it solves real problems at the regional level. After the lecture, Rachid Alimov took questions from the audience.
