September 1st, MGIMO celebrated Knowledge Day, as has become a tradition, with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. The Minister praised the University for its role in training high quality diplomats, spoke about current international relations and answered students questions.
MGIMO Rector Anatoly Torkunov presented the guest of honor and congratulated the freshmen on the start of a new page of their lives, wishing them joy and success in their studies.
Sergei Lavrov extended his compliments to the newly matriculated students and remarked that "MGIMO University is a unique educational platform [...] where international relations, world economy, international law and political science are comprehensively studied. The research carried out at the University is used by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs when preparing foreign policy decisions".
The Foreign Minister noted that MGIMO is always widening the scope of its activities, as reflected by the opening of its Odintsovo campus. Sergei Lavrov also delivered some practical advice to the students, emphasizing the importance of simple human communication and noting that a "face to face" conversation should always be preferred to any other kind. The Foreign Minister then made a talk on Russia's foreign policy priorities, noting that while the country is ready to restore full-fledged relations with the USA and the UE, it will only do so on an equal footing. Russia also aims at reinforcing its cooperation with the Asia-Pacific region which is experiencing quick economic development.
