August 8th to 11th, the second General Assembly of universities participating in the research and education Silkroad Universities Network (SUN) unfolded in Seoul. The event was hosted by Hankuk University, a leading institute in the Republic of Korea renowned for its language and civilization programs. MGIMO was represented by its Vice-Rector for Graduate and International Programs, Andrey Baykov.
Silkroad Universities Network was set up in 2014 at the initiative of the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies and the Provincial Government of Gyeongsangbuk-do (South Korea). The goal of the project is the restore the historical value of the ancient silk road, which is the key to peaceful coexistence and collective prosperity. The kick-off meeting of the newly formed network was held in August 2015 in Gyeongju, South Korea. Three Russian universities participate in the network: MGIMO, Irkutsk State Technical University and Ural Federal University.
The project started off as a platform for communication between universities and has already led to discussions regarding the elaboration of joint educational modules, opportunities for exchanges between students, Faculty members and administrative staff in order to promote the sharing of «best practices» in the management of higher education.
The agenda of the event comprised plenary discussions and short presentations with concrete proposals made by members of the network. In his statement, Andrey Baykov presented MGIMO’s experience in implementing international educational partnerships and discussed new multilateral educational programs which involve three or four partner universities.
While such practices are growing in popularity, East Asian countries have to overcome a number of administrative difficulties related to setting up unified admission requirements and mutually recognized qualifications. Following the meeting, all proposals will be consolidated in order to develop a strategic development program for the network.
