UNESCO Chair: Language Policies for Multilingualism

July 30th, MGIMO’s Vice-Rector for Graduate and International Programs Andrey Baykov, the Head of the UNESCO Department Alexei Borisov and the Professor of the Department of Romance Languages Galina Petrova met with Gilvan Müller de Oliveira Professor at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (Brazil), and Edleise Mendes, Professor at the Federal University of Bahia (Brazil).

Professor Gilvan Müller de Oliveira is the coordinator of the project «UNESCO Chair: Language Policies for Multilingualism». The project on multilingualism deals with intercultural interaction, teaching foreign languages, challenges linked to the translation and accessibility of archives, the right to use one’s native language, communication and information technology, and many other topics.

23 universities and institutions from 13 countries (including Brazil, Mexico, India, Indonesia, France, Spain, Belgium, Estonia and South Africa) participate in the UNESCO project. The Russian State University for the Humanities with its Educational and Scientific Center for the Study of Ethno-political and Ethno-cultural Processes is currently Russia’s only member.

Professor Gilvan de Oliveira suggested MGIMO be included in this program. During the meeting, the sides discussed the prospects for cooperation and the different joint research projects, which could be launched.
