November 8th, the Russian Foreign Ministry hosted at its Spiridonovka Reception House, a reception dedicated to celebrating two events: United Nations day (which was October 24th) and the 70th anniversary of United Nations’ presence in the Soviet Union and Russia.
The event was jointly organized by the United Nations Association of Russia and the UN Information Center in Moscow and was attended by representatives of the Foreign Ministry, the Russian Duma, the Government, the media, civil society and corporations. All the guests celebrated together this important anniversary and thought about the organization’s role for the future.
MGIMO Rector Anatoly Torkunov, also the Chairman of the United Nations Association of Russia underlined the specificities of the UN, which solves simultaneously a myriad of issues at different levels and has an impact on the whole world.
Pyotr Ilyichev, Director of the Department of International Organizations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, noted that the creation of the UN was one of the greatest successes of the Allies’ cooperation at the end of World War II and that it has proven over time its effectiveness in preventing global conflicts.
Vladimir Voronkov, Under-Secretary-General and Head of the UN Counter-Terrorism Office, emphasized the importance of the anniversary not only for the UN but also for Russia and reminded the guests about the Sustainable Development Goals that the international community is striving to meet. Other members of the organization shared their words of wisdom with the audience, which later was invited to listen to various musical performances.
