September 14th, the second meeting of the Organizing Committee dedicated to preparing events to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Russian Revolution, created in January 2017, took place at the TASS News Agency. MGIMO Rector Anatoly Torkunov, also Chairman of the Organizing Committee, presided over the meeting.
The event gathered prominent academics, historians, directors from museums, archive centers and the media. Anatoly Torkunov together with the Chairman of the Russian Historical Society Sergey Naryshkin described to the audience past and upcoming events. Out of the 118 events in this year’s program, 44 have been completed, 28 are under way and 36 will be realized between September and December 2017. A number of events will take place abroad.
Yuri Petrov, Director of the Institute of Russian History of the Russian Academy of Sciences gave a talk on the importance of commemorating September 14th, as it was exactly 100 years ago that the Provisional Government proclaimed Russia a republic. Various guests of honor delivered lectures on relations between the Church, Society and the Media and explaining the chronology of revolutionary events. Others presented the projects under way, major publications and conference projects.
MGIMO has prepared two collective monographs on the Russian Revolution and will host on September 27th a scientific conference «The Russian Revolution of 1917 and its place in the history of the 20th century». Mid-October, at the annual meeting of the Valdai Club, MGIMO will organize a session on the international consequences of the Great Russian Revolution.
