On February 21-22 the ASEAN Centre at MGIMO University in cooperation with the Thammasat University (Thailand) held in hybrid format an international academic conference on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Russia and Thailand.
Ambassador of Russia to Thailand H.E. Evgeny Tomikhin and Ambassador of Thailand to Russia H.E. Sasiwat Wongsinsawat welcomed the conference’s participants. Dr. Andrey Baykov, MGIMO Vice-Rector for Science and Research in his welcoming remarks introduced the history of MGIMO partnerships with leading Thailand research institutions and agencies as well as the ASEAN Centre’s projects devoted to Thailand and Russia-Thailand relations.
Within two days the invited experts, diplomats, businessmen and artists discussed the Russia and Thailand bilateral cooperation issues. The conference’s agenda covered political and economic cooperation, interaction between Thai studies in Russia and Russia studies in Thailand, as well as cultural and educational cooperation. As a part of the event Dr. Jittipat Poonkham arranged also a virtual book launch seminar on his work A Genealogy of Bamboo Diplomacy: The Politics of Thai Détente with Russia and China (ANU Press. The book focuses on the concept of Thailand’s bamboo diplomacy.
Among the conference guests were Thai officers and students, who study in Russia, representatives from the Royal Thai Embassy in Moscow and Russia-Thailand Business Council as well as prominent specialists in Russian studies from Thailand and Russian experts on Thailand, and Russian students majoring in Thai language studies. The hybrid format made it possible for participants to join the conference from different parts of Russia and Thailand and other ASEAN member-states.
The year 2022 the ASEAN Centre jointly with its Russian and Thailand partners will hold a series of educational and cultural events in commemoration of the 125th anniversary of bilateral relations.
