Internship programme InteRussia: call for applications is open

The MGIMO-University in partnership with the Gorchakov Fund and Rossotrudnichestvo open a call for applications for the programme of scientific and research internships for foreign experts InteRussia.

InteRussia is an opportunity for foreign experts in the history and theory of international relations, political science and foreign regional studies to learn about the Russian scientific and expert agenda, visit government authorities, participate in expert sessions by universities, think tanks and public organisations.

The key advantage of the programme is working under the supervision of leading MGIMO researchers with the possibility of subsequent publication of the research in Russian or foreign journals.

InteRussia’s mission is to expand and deepen scientific, social and cultural ties between Russia and foreign countries and to create a basis for constructive dialogue between young international scientists.

The first wave of the programme in 2022 will run from March 21 to May 1 at the MGIMO-University. The topic of the new wave: “The Post-Soviet Space 30 years after the Breakup of the USSR”.

Potential research topics of the internship (applicants can propose their own topics):

  1. problems of water supply in Central Asia;
  2. “the politics of memory” in the post-Soviet space;
  3. elites of the post-Soviet states;
  4. migration in the post-Soviet space;
  5. de-facto states of Eurasia;
  6. spatial analysis in regional integration and electoral behaviour studies;
  7. political and economic alliances in the post-Soviet space.

Deadline for applications: January 31, 11:59 pm Moscow time. The results of the competition will be announced on February 21. All candidates will be notified about the results by email.

The internship will result in an original research project of at least 20,000 characters (incl. spaces), prepared by the applicant on the basis of an individual research plan in Russian or English.

Who can apply?

Applicants, who meet the following requirements at the time of the application deadline, will be able to participate in the competition:

  1. foreign citizenship and absence of Russian citizenship or a permanent resident permit in Russia;
  2. age 25-35;
  3. strong/professional knowledge of Russian is preferred;
  4. strong/professional knowledge of English (at least B2 level);
  5. submission of an individual research plan on the selected topic;
  6. absence of any employment or other relations with MGIMO (including part-time employment; also, the applicants should not have been part of a PhD program at MGIMO or defended their theses at MGIMO);
  7. professional or research experience that meets one of the following criteria:
    — an academic degree or a PhD degree received within the last five years;
    — successful defense of a PhD thesis or completing the last year of postgraduate studies.

Selection of the applicants for the internship will be based on results of the competition. The competition criteria include:

  1. academic level, relevance, level of detail and feasibility of the applicant's research plan;
  2. publication activity of the applicant;
  3. academic level of the applicant's publications;
  4. nature of recommendations received;
  5. other research and expert activities of the applicant (participation in conferences, grants awarded, academic internships, expert publications, comments in the media, etc.);
  6. interview results (online).

Terms of participation:

The organizers will cover:

  • travel expenses to/from Moscow;
  • double accommodation in the MGIMO dormitory;
  • a scholarship for the duration of the internship in the amount of 45,000 rubles.

The participants are responsible for for:

  • PCR test;
  • medical insurance.
