MGIMO Rector Receives Speaker of Czech Chamber of Deputies

October 15th, the management of MGIMO welcomed the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Parliament, Radek Vondrachek, who delivered a lecture to students of the University.

The delegation of the Czech Republic also comprised the country’s Ambassador to Russia Vitezslav Pivonka, the Member of Parliament Miroslav Janulik, the Secretary General of the Office of the Chamber of Deputies Jan Moravek and other diplomats and civil servants. The guests were received by MGIMO Rector Anatoly Torkunov and the Vice-Rector for Research, Evgeny Kozhokin.

The Rector described the activities of the Russian-Czech discussion forum, which held its first gathering in June in Prague, and will meet again in May-June next year. One of the main priorities of the forum is to develop bilateral cultural cooperation and to encourage informal discussions between citizens of both countries on a variety of topics. Anatoly Torkunov also spoke about the international conference on the establishment of the Czechoslovak Republic, which will be held at MGIMO on October 23rd. The Rector described MGIMO’s international outlook and its cooperation agreements with Czech universities.

Radek Vondrachek devoted his lecture to the role of parliamentary diplomacy in international relations, focusing his analysis on Central European countries. The Speaker described the work of the Parliamentary Commission on European Affairs of the Visegrad group, and emphasized the importance of informal interaction, including cultural, scientific and sports events.
