Sergey Lavrov Chairs Meeting of MGIMO Supervisory Board and Board of Trustees

February 13th, a joint meeting of MGIMO’s Supervisory Board and Board of Trustees, chaired by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, unfolded at the Foreign Ministry.

In his welcome words, Sergey Lavrov underlined the essential role that board members play in the management of MGIMO, by giving recommendations and support regarding the development of the University.

Considering the year 2016, the Foreign Minister remarked that MGIMO’s position had improved both in international and Russian rankings, that the demand to study within its walls had increased, and that the level of newly-enrolled students was the highest in the country (according to their results at the Russian Unified State Exam). Sergey Lavrov also spoke about the opening of MGIMO’s Odintsovo campus and the Gorchakov lyceum. Regarding upcoming events, he mentioned the next MGIMO Alumni Forum, which is to be held in Kazakhstan in October 2017.

MGIMO Rector Anatoly Torkunov presented to the audience the progress made by the University in 2016 and thanked the trustees for their support. The Rector spoke of the different areas of training MGIMO offers, emphasizing the importance of the «International Relations» and «Area Studies». Anatoly Torkunov underlined MGIMO’s commitment to the internationalization of all its programs, in partnership with some of the best universities worldwide.

After the Rector’s speech, the members of the board shared their ideas regarding the direction MGIMO should take in 2017 and made suggestions related to financial matters.
